Zimpler Wins in Court Against Spelinspektionen

Zimpler has emerged victorious in a legal battle against the Swedish gambling authority (Spelinspektionen), which oversees the legality and safety of gambling activities in Sweden.

An anonymous tip led the Swedish gambling authority to investigate the payment provider Zimpler. The Authority then ordered Zimpler to stop providing payment services using the BankID e-identification system to gambling companies that do not have a Swedish license under the Gambling Act (2018:1138). It was stated that Zimpler must comply with this order by July 31, 2023, or face a fine of 25 million SEK.

Following a change in gambling laws in Sweden on January 1, 2023, it became illegal to promote participation in unlicensed games for profit, whether professionally or otherwise. If a company is aware that a payment is related to illegal gambling but still processes it, this action is considered a violation of the law.

Zimpler contested the Authority's decision on July 31, 2023, and took the matter to court. The Administrative Court has now ruled in favor of Zimpler, annulling the Swedish gambling authority's decision. This means that Zimpler has successfully won the legal battle.

This win is huge for Zimpler. Still, they have announced that they have terminated agreements with gaming companies in the EU that accept Swedish customers without having a Swedish license. So, we guess this is also a win for the Swedish gambling authority. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting news in the casino gaming world!
